Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
