At least 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Police Raid on Organized Crime

No less than 64 civilians died in a police operation against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's records.

Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of AlemĂŁo and Penha, government representatives stated. In excess of 80 suspects were detained.

Fierce clashes commenced when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho reacted using shooting, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.

The United Nations human rights body said it was "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

Local authorities stated a minimum of 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Resident Accounts

Community members have compared the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the raid started.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Gang Growth

The criminal network have been expanding their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement said more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, together with multiple guns.

Operation Background

The combined action by various security forces was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be members of a faction from the Pará state who are currently hiding in the city.
