Gavin Newsom States He Is Weighing a White House Bid in 2028

The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he will decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections are over.

"Yes, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom stated when pressed about seriously considering a White House bid after the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

The governor's time in office as California's leader wraps up in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he noted that any choice is still years away.

"It's up to destiny," he added.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

Newsom has come to the forefront as a notable critic of the former president's team, employing his social media accounts and pushing a proposition that would expand the party's congressional seats in response to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a Sunday interview on Fox News. Duffy announced a strategy to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and suggested eliminating the power to grant CDLs.

"I intend to cut $160 million from the state," Duffy declared, after a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.

Newsom's office highlighted that the U.S. government had renewed the driver's employment on several occasions, which enabled him to receive a commercial driver's license under federal law.

The transportation secretary had before stated he was holding back $40m from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Team

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp federal law," Newsom's office retorted in a recent statement addressing Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations

A this month's study revealed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters indicated that Newsom must consider running for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has increased to an mean of about one-third from previous levels, while his disapproval has dropped from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.

Earlier this year, the governor commented while on a trip several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for 2028.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.

"The thought that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, amazing," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
