A uniquely yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us locate the footage.

Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to check the location from which the images were from relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.

Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
